Around ten million pensioners and public benefit recipients in Spain, including the Canary Islands, are awaiting confirmation of how much their payments will rise in 2026, with the final figure depending on how inflation closes out this year.
Although the definitive Consumer Price Index (CPI) data will not be known until December, current projections suggest that contributory pensions will increase by between 2.6% and 2.7% next year.
The National Statistics Institute (INE) is expected to confirm October’s provisional inflation rate of 3.1% on 14th November, followed by the final CPI figure in December, when the Government will set the official revaluation percentage.
Under the 2022 pension reform introduced by former Social Security Minister José Luis Escrivá, contributory pensions are automatically updated each January based on the average CPI of the previous 12 months.
This rule, enshrined in Article 58 of the General Social Security Law, ensures annual adjustments in line with inflation, including the gender gap supplement.
However, not all pensions will rise equally. Minimum and non-contributory pensions will once again see above-inflation increases, as part of the second phase of the Escrivá reform. The goal is to ensure that by 2027, these pensions reach at least the poverty threshold.
The Royal Decree-Law 2/2023 uses the minimum contributory retirement pension for over-65s with a dependent spouse as a benchmark. In 2026, these minimum pensions will receive an additional uplift to reduce by half the gap remaining toward that target amount. The same rule will apply to widowhood pensions with dependents and other contributory pensions with a dependent spouse (except total permanent disability under 60).
Non-contributory pensions will also rise by an extra percentage next year, bringing them closer to 75% of the poverty threshold for a single person, the goal set for 2027.
