Gatwick Airport reopens after full evacuation and two detained passengers released

Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal has reopened after a security incident caused significant disruption, leading to hours-long evacuations yesterday (Friday). Sussex Police confirmed that two people detained during the incident have been released and allowed to resume their journeys.

The disruption began after the discovery of a "suspected prohibited item" in a passenger's luggage. This prompted a major emergency response, including the deployment of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

The EOD team worked swiftly to "make the package safe," according to Sussex Police, which then handed control of the terminal back to Gatwick's operator.

In a statement, Sussex Police expressed gratitude to the public and airport staff for their patience, adding: "There will remain an increased police presence in the area to assist passengers accessing the South Terminal for onward travel."

Evacuations and Delays

The South Terminal was evacuated at 10.55am yesterday morning, causing disruption for travellers. Videos shared on social media depicted crowds of passengers being directed away from the building, with many reporting that even those already through security were told to leave.

Passengers described scenes of confusion and disruption:

  • One traveller mentioned being evacuated immediately after clearing customs.
  • Another noted "thousands" of people being forced out, with trains and airport services temporarily halted.

Outside the terminal, blankets and water were provided to displaced passengers.

Impact on Flights and Transport

Gatwick Airport, the UK’s second busiest, reported flight cancellations and delays during the incident. Passengers were advised to contact their airlines for updates, as more than 600 flights, carrying over 121,000 passengers, were scheduled to operate on Friday.

While the North Terminal continued operating as usual, the Gatwick Express rail service temporarily suspended stops at the airport. Service resumed once the South Terminal was fully reopened.
