A Polish fugitive accused of 49 criminal offences in his home country has been released on provisional bail after being arrested in South Tenerife. He was captured by the National Police in April and could reportedly face up to 485 years in prison if convicted in Poland.

The decision by Spain’s National Court has surprised both Polish and Spanish investigators, who had spent months tracking him down. Prosecutors argued there was no serious risk of him fleeing justice, despite the scale of the allegations against him.

The fugitive, identified as Feliksiak Lukasz, was wanted under a European Arrest Warrant for offences including illegal weapons possession and manufacture, drug trafficking, and fraud.

According to investigators, he had been hiding in a house in Arona with his wife and two children. Police say he rarely left the property except to walk his dog and allegedly kept the door open in case he needed to escape quickly.

Officers first tried to arrest him earlier this year, but he managed to run after reportedly jumping from a rear balcony around five metres high. In February, police found him again during a traffic stop where he was allegedly using false documents, but he escaped by car, reportedly putting officers and other drivers at risk and damaging several vehicles during the pursuit.

He was eventually arrested on 15th April during a major operation involving the National Police’s Special Operations Group (GOES). Officers intercepted him as he attempted to run back into the property after spotting police approaching.

Despite his release, the court has banned him from leaving Spain. His passport has been confiscated, and he must report to court every two weeks while extradition proceedings continue.

The case has raised questions among some investigators about how the court assessed the risk of escape, particularly after previous attempts to evade arrest. However, his defence lawyer agreed with the position taken by prosecutors.
