Fuerteventura Airport has become a crucial diversion point for flights across the Canary Islands, as hurricane force winds caused by Storm Therese continue to cause widespread disruption to air travel.

According to airport operator AENA, a total of 25 flight cancellations and five diversions had been recorded across the islands by Friday afternoon due to adverse weather conditions.

Widespread Cancellations Across the Islands

La Palma Airport has been the hardest hit, with 13 cancellations on routes from Tenerife North, five from Gran Canaria, one from Tenerife South, and another incoming flight from Berlin also affected.

At El Hierro Airport, five flights were cancelled, including two from Tenerife North, one to Gran Canaria, and two additional services linked to Tenerife North.

Flights Diverted as Conditions Worsen

Severe weather has also forced several flights to change course. A flight from Milan bound for La Palma was diverted to Tenerife South.

Meanwhile, two flights heading to El Hierro — one from Tenerife North and another from Gran Canaria — were forced to turn back to their departure airports.

In addition, two international flights originally heading to Gran Canaria from Oslo and Gatwick were diverted to Fuerteventura, highlighting the island’s role as a safe alternative during the disruption.

Storm Therese Continues to Affect Air Travel

The ongoing effects of Storm Therese, including strong winds and poor visibility, are continuing to affect both inter-island and international flights.

Passengers are advised to check with their airlines before travelling and allow extra time at airports while conditions remain unstable.
