In a move that brings joy to residents and promotes sustainable mobility, the Spanish government has announced the extension of free public transport in the Canary Islands for an additional year. The decision was approved during Wednesday's Council of Ministers meeting, demonstrating the commitment to supporting the well-being of the islands.
Last year, a groundbreaking initiative was implemented, offering a 100% discount on regular bus transportation for passengers in the Canary Islands. This measure, initially set at a 50% discount, was elevated to full coverage through collaborative efforts between the Coalition of Canaries and the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in support of Pedro Sánchez's investiture.
Pablo Rodríguez, the Minister of Transport for the Canary Islands government, expressed the administration's dedication to addressing regional differences. “They are actively considering eliminating the minimum monthly trip requirement, previously set at 15, acknowledging that the travel dynamics vary between islands, emphasizing the need for flexibility.”
Rodríguez highlighted the significance of this decision, stating, "This anticipated news stems from considerable effort and responds to the demand for equal treatment for the Canary Islands in terms of public transportation discounts, similar to those applied to commuter and mid-distance travel on the mainland."
The positive impact of free transportation has been tangible, with a remarkable 46% increase in the number of new users. Rodríguez emphasized that this successful initiative not only lightens the financial burden on individuals but also champions sustainable mobility.
At the same time, the Council of Ministers has extended the gratuity for frequent users of Cercanías trains, Rodalies, Media Distancia, and state bus lines on the mainland for another year. Although the Canary Islands lack railways (except for the two urban tram lines in Tenerife) and state bus lines, compensatory measures were introduced last year, making urban and interurban bus lines and the tram in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna free for frequent users.
This extension of free public transportation underlines the government's commitment to fostering accessibility, promoting environmental consciousness, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents in the Canary Islands.
