Icelandic budget airline Fly PLAY has announced the immediate suspension of all operations and the cancellation of its entire flight schedule, leaving around 400 staff without jobs and thousands of passengers stranded, including here in the Canary Islands.

In a statement released yesterday, Monday, the airline confirmed that affected passengers will need to make their own arrangements to reach their destinations. Other carriers may step in with special “rescue fares”, but customers must organise and pay for rebooking themselves.

Founded in 2021, PLAY set out to connect North America and Europe via Iceland, but after struggling to make its transatlantic routes profitable, it shifted focus to holiday destinations. Despite the change of strategy, results fell short.

“It has become clear that the changes cannot deliver enough to overcome our challenges,” the airline admitted, adding that its revised plan “should have been implemented earlier,” according to Bloomberg.

At the time of closure, Fly PLAY operated a fleet of 10 Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft, serving around 30 mainly European leisure destinations. In Spain, its routes included Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid, Málaga, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

Passengers who have already booked are advised to apply for ticket refunds through the airline, which has apologised for the disruption caused.
