Five islands are on pre-alert for dangerous sea and coastal conditions

The General Directorate of Emergencies for the Canary Islands Government, has declared a pre-alert on the islands of La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria for coastal phenomena and adverse sea conditions tomorrow, Sunday.

The warning will come into effect from 7:00am in accordance with the Specific Plan for Emergencies of the Canary Islands due to Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA), following information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other available sources

The forecast predicts strong force 7 northeast winds at sea ranging from 50 to 61 kilometres per hour between the islands of La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Tenerife, and the southeast of Gran Canaria, along with rough seas, deep swell, and waves of one to two metres in height.

Given this situation, the Government urges the population to avoid risky situations in coastal areas, and to follow self-protection recommendations to prevent risks and accidents on rocks, on the coast, and at sea.

They advise not to be on docks and breakwaters, nor to stay in places close to the sea to avoid being hit or swept away by the waves. In this regard, it is reminded not to take selfies or videos in these areas near the coast.

Furthermore, it is reminded that swimming is prohibited on beaches or in natural pools where a red flag is displayed, and people should always avoid entering the sea in areas with strong waves and undertows, or no lifeguards and rescue services.

Until this situation ends, it is advisable to postpone nautical or sports activities, and boats should be securely moored in a sheltered location. In case of emergency, call 112 immediately.
