The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has officially started a nationwide road-safety operation from today, Monday, with a strong and targeted presence across the Canary Islands. The campaign, running until Sunday (15th February), focuses on inspecting vehicles used for transporting goods and passengers, sectors considered critical for road safety and the regional economy.
The initiative aims to reduce accidents by intensifying controls on professional drivers and fleet operators. Traffic officers from the Guardia Civil supported by local and regional police forces, will increase checks at strategic points and on high-density routes throughout the archipelago.
Nearly 600 fines in last year’s campaign
Authorities justify the enhanced operation with data from a similar campaign carried out last February. According to the DGT, 595 sanctions were issued after inspecting 2,376 vehicles.
- Lorries: 492 reported for irregularities.
- Buses and coaches: 103 sanctions from 448 inspections.
These figures confirm a persistent level of non-compliance that the DGT is now aiming to reduce.
What will be checked?
Agents will carry out both technical and regulatory inspections, covering:
- Vehicle condition: tyres, brakes, lights, and onboard safety systems.
- Driving hours: meticulous review of tachographs to ensure mandatory rest periods.
- Professional accreditation: driving licences and transport-specific qualifications.
- Risk factors: systematic alcohol and drug testing, plus speed controls.
Island-wide surveillance
The operation will not be limited to motorways. The DGT confirms that checks will extend to all types of roads and at any time of day, with particular attention to routes most heavily used by lorries and buses.
The objective is twofold: to raise awareness among professional drivers and to prevent serious collisions involving large vehicles, whose weight and size significantly increase the severity of accidents.
Ultimately, officials hope to reduce last year’s sanction numbers and ensure safer roads for residents, workers, and visitors throughout the Canary Islands.
