The Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT) has announced a new incentive programme to reward responsible drivers with bonus licence points, plus financial support of up to €2,000 as part of a wider plan to address the growing shortage of professional drivers.

One of the key initiatives is the voluntary Safe and Efficient Driving Course (CCSE), which is now available to holders of car (B) and motorcycle or moped licences (AM, A1, A2, A). Drivers who complete the course successfully will receive a two-point bonus on their driving licence, up to the legal maximum of 15 points.

The course covers advanced driving techniques to help participants anticipate and avoid potential hazards, handle vehicles in adverse conditions, and reduce both fuel consumption and harmful emissions.

However, not all drivers are eligible. To take part, you must have a valid driving licence, appear in the DGT’s driver registry, and have a positive points balance at the time of enrolment. The bonus does not apply to those who already have 15 points, and each person may only complete one course per vehicle category every two years.

Interested drivers can find a list of DGT-accredited training centres offering the courses on the official DGT website.

Grants of Up to €2,000 for Lorry and Bus Licences

In a separate but related measure, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility is offering grants of between €1,500 and €2,000 to help cover the cost of obtaining a lorry (C) or bus (D) driving licence. These grants are part of the government's Plan Reconduce, designed to address the severe driver shortage in the road transport sector.

Eligible applicants must already hold a Technical Qualification in Road Transport Vehicle Driving, and enrol in a driving school after the publication of the Royal Decree regulating the programme, which is expected shortly.

The funds can be used to cover expenses such as exam fees, medical assessments, and driving school training. Once approved, recipients will have 12 months (extendable by 6 months in certain cases) to obtain their professional licence.

The government has allocated a budget of €500,000 for this initiative, which aims to attract over 35,000 new professional drivers, especially among young people, the unemployed, and military personnel transitioning to civilian life.

These measures reflect Spain’s proactive approach to both road safety and the pressing labour demands in the transport sector, offering opportunities for upskilling and employment to a wide range of citizens, including residents in the Canary Islands.
