Two people have been arrested in Tenerife after allegedly scamming more than €5,000 through fake property rental adverts, targeting residents and potential tenants in the south of the island.

Officers from the Guardia Civil’s specialist cybercrime unit in Playa de Las Américas detained a 45-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, both living in San Miguel de Abona. Investigators say the pair used social media and messaging apps to advertise flats and rooms that were either fake or did not match the real properties.

According to the investigation, victims were persuaded to agree to rental terms and even sign contracts through deceptive tactics. They were then asked to make payments for deposits, fees or insurance via bank transfer, cash or instant payment apps.

Once the money had been sent, the suspects allegedly delayed responses with excuses before cutting off all contact. Several victims, mainly from different parts of southern Tenerife, are believed to have been affected.

Police say the scam exploited the high demand for housing in the south of the island, where limited availability can leave people more vulnerable to fraud. The case highlights ongoing risks for both residents and newcomers searching for accommodation.

The Guardia Civil is urging anyone looking to rent to be cautious of adverts with unusually low prices and to verify the identity of landlords or agencies before making any payments. They also recommend researching contact details online and checking images carefully, as stolen or low-quality photos can be a warning sign.

Prospective tenants are advised to view properties in person wherever possible and avoid paying money up front without proper guarantees.
