Costa Adeje registers Spain's highest temperatures on Monday

The heatwave that the Canary Islands are currently experiencing shows no signs of letting up until the weekend, with temperatures expected to remain at 34 degrees or more until Saturday (October 14th).

Temperatures in the Islands have been highly unusual for over a week now, with readings soaring above 36 degrees in many parts of the islands, and even reaching almost 40 degrees, accompanied by an intense calima from the Sahara.

Yesterday, nine of the ten highest temperatures in the whole of Spain were recorded in the Canary Islands. In Adeje (Tenerife south) and Güímar, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) measured highs of 38 degrees Celsius, almost on par with the towns of Tasarte in La Aldea de San Nicolás (Gran Canaria), which recorded 37.9 degrees, and Arucas with 37.8 degrees.

The Basque town of Zumarraga in mainland Spain registered 37.6 degrees, surpassing La Graciosa with 37.5 degrees and Tenerife South Airport with 37.1 degrees, while temperatures over 36 degrees were recorded in El Matorral, San Bartolomé Tirajana (36.5°), La Dama in Vallehermoso (La Gomera) (36.5°), Arico (Tenerife), and Mogan (Gran Canaria) (36.3°), as well as Antigua (Fuerteventura) with 36 degrees.

On the other hand, the lowest temperatures recorded yesterday were in Teide National Park: 13.3 degrees in Izaña and 13.7 degrees at the Parador, followed by Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma with 14.6 degrees.

All the islands, except La Palma and northern Tenerife, are under a yellow alert for high temperatures today. According to AEMET, temperatures could reach up to 36 degrees in the east, south, and west of Tenerife, and could even exceed 37 degrees in parts.
