Canary Islands to witness first solar eclipse in 20 years this Saturday morning

People in the Canary Islands will have the rare opportunity to witness the first solar eclipse visible from the archipelago this Saturday morning, in two decades.

The partial eclipse will begin at 10:15am, reach its peak at 11:04am, and conclude at 11:56am.

At its maximum, the eclipse will cover approximately 40% of the Sun’s surface as the Moon passes in front of it. The phenomenon will be visible across the entire Spanish territory, though the degree of visibility will vary depending on the region.

While this weekend’s eclipse is a noteworthy event, the most spectacular solar phenomenon is yet to come. On 12th August 2026, Spain will experience its first total solar eclipse since 1959, when 100% of the sun was obscured, although it was visible only from the Canary Islands. The last total eclipse visible from mainland Spain occurred even earlier, in 1912.

Experts warn that observing a solar eclipse without proper protection can cause serious eye damage. To safely view the event, it is essential to use certified eclipse glasses. Traditional sunglasses offer no protection, and neither cameras nor telescopes should be used unless equipped with approved solar filters.
