The Canary Islands are set to receive a record €7.524 billion in funding from Spain's Ministry of Finance in 2025, the highest allocation in the region’s history.
This includes €6.594 billion in advance payments, an 8.6% increase compared to last year, plus an additional €986 million from the 2023 fiscal settlement. The settlement accounts for the difference between previously estimated and actual revenue collected.
The figures were confirmed following approval by the Council of Ministers and form part of a national funding package of €158.17 billion for Spain’s autonomous communities, also the highest on record.
The funding increases come despite an extended national budget, with the government separating regional financing from budget approval, a move previously opposed by the former Rajoy administration.
Finance Minister, María Jesús Montero (pictured), highlighted that this approach reinforces the government’s commitment to regional autonomy and public services, especially after its response during the COVID-19 pandemic, when regions continued to receive full payments despite a sharp economic downturn.
Compared to the period under Mariano Rajoy’s government, the Canary Islands will have received 64% more funding over the last seven years, an increase of €17.7 billion, according to the Ministry of Finance.
In addition to regional funding, local councils across Spain will receive €28.73 billion in 2025, another record-high figure.
