The Canary Islands will continue under a yellow weather warning for strong waves and wind throughout Sunday, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
The alert for “coastal phenomena” and adverse sea conditions affects the entire archipelago, with a large swell from the north of 4 metres causing large waves and dangerous currents. Additionally, there will be force 7 winds from the northeast of 50 to 61 km/h, mainly on the southeast coasts until the evening.
The public are strongly advised to observe red or yellow flags on beaches and bathing areas before venturing into the water, particularly in open areas.
As for the wind warning, it will affect the islands of El Hierro, La Gomera, Lanzarote, and the summit of Gran Canaria. In these islands, there will be gusts up to 70 km/h, with Gran Canaria experiencing stronger winds in the Tejeda and La Aldea de San Nicolás area, El Hierro in the southwest, and La Gomera at summits.
The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) reported several incidents yesterday, Saturday, caused by the wind, and some events cancelled in Tenerife.
They are urging extreme caution on the coasts open to the north and west of the islands due to the strong swell with large areas of rough sea and northwest groundswell, recommending avoiding paths or walkways near the coast in these areas.
Yesterday, the Local Police closed access to all beaches in the municipality of La Orotava due to the strong waves and dangerous sea conditions in the area.
At the same time, the Candelaria Council suspended the Carnival events scheduled for last night due to the weather warnings and forecast, as they felt that it would be dangerous for the large number of people that would attend, taking into account there were over 2,000 people in the participating dance and musical groups before you count the crowd.
CECOES warn that waves could reach four to six metres in height on open coasts to the north and west of the islands and advises not to be near piers, breakwaters, or close to the sea due to the risk of a wave hitting or dragging someone into the water and onto rocks.
