The Directorate General for Emergencies has declared an official wind alert for La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, effective from 00:00h on Sunday (18th January 2026) and lasting until further notice.
The decision is based on forecasts from AEMET and other available meteorological sources, and follows the protocols set out in the Canary Islands Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather (PEFMA).
A pre-alert remains in place for the rest of the archipelago.
According to the forecast, strong north-westerly winds will shift to northerly winds during the second half of the day, affecting the high ground and the eastern and western slopes of the mountainous islands most intensely.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will also experience notable gusts during central hours of the day.
Authorities warn that wind gusts are expected to reach or exceed 70 km/h across the alert zones, with locally very strong gusts potentially surpassing 90 km/h in the highest areas of the major islands.
Residents and visitors are advised to follow official guidance, exercise caution in exposed areas, and stay updated through emergency channels.
