The Canary Islands Government has downgraded its maximum heat alert to a general heat alert, but warns that the sweltering conditions will continue across the archipelago for now.

The change, announced by the Directorate General of Emergencies, applies to all islands, is based on forecasts from Spain’s national weather agency AEMET and other sources, as part of the Canary Islands’ Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

Temperatures easing – but still hot

While temperatures are starting to drop, the Government says the relief will be gradual. Highs of 34°C to 38°C are still expected in inland areas, mid-altitude zones, and higher terrain.

Minimum temperatures will also remain above 20°C, meaning the “tropical nights” that have made sleeping difficult for many will continue across much of the region.

Staying safe in the heat

The Directorate General of Emergencies continues to advise:

  • Drink water frequently to stay hydrated.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure during the hottest part of the day.
  • Wear light, breathable clothing.
  • Pay extra attention to elderly people, children, and vulnerable groups.

Authorities stress that these measures remain essential to prevent heat-related health problems until conditions return to normal.
