Canary Islands airports see a record number of flights over the Christmas period

Canary Islands airports are experiencing a notable increase in flights this Christmas and New Year, with a total of 25,212 scheduled between 20th December 2024 and 7th January 2025.

This represents a 20.42% increase compared to the same period in 2023/24, when there were 20,936 flights and started two days later, on 22nd December.

Yesterday, Saturday, was the busiest day for air traffic in the Canary Islands, with 1,681 flight operations, according to data provided by AENA. Additional peak days include today, Sunday 22nd December, with 1,506 flights, 28th December with 1,612 flights, and 4th January with 1,629 flights. Conversely, Christmas Day will be the quietest, with 856 flights planned.

Gran Canaria Leads in Scheduled Flights

Comparing the islands, Gran Canaria Airport tops the list with 7,695 flights planned, marking a 21.2% increase compared to last Christmas. Tenerife South follows with 5,429 operations, up by 16.17%, and Lanzarote Airport comes third with 3,840 flights, reflecting a 17.1% increase.

Other notable increases are observed at Tenerife North Airport, which has scheduled 3,763 flights (+27.5%), and Fuerteventura Airport, with 2,912 operations (+24.8%). Meanwhile, smaller airports, including La Palma with 1,155 flights (+14.9%), El Hierro with 266 (+21.4%), and La Gomera with 152 (+11.7%), are also showing steady growth.

Enhanced Services and Winter Operations

The surge in activity highlights the importance of the Canary Islands as a key destination during the festive season, driven by its favourable winter climate. AENA has implemented measures to ensure smooth operations, accommodating the increased demand and maintaining high service standards.

While the holiday season brings a rush of activity to the skies, efforts remain focused on managing the flow efficiently, ensuring passengers enjoy a seamless travel experience during one of the busiest times of the year.
