The Canary Islands Government has declared two new weather pre-alerts, adding to the existing coastal warning already in place. These measures have been introduced in response to the approaching isolated high-altitude depression (DANA) that is set to impact the archipelago over the weekend.
The new pre-alert for rain will affect Tenerife, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, La Gomera, and La Palma from 12:00 midday on Sunday (2nd March), according to the Directorate General of Emergencies of the regional government.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has also issued a special warning regarding the DANA, urging residents to take precautions.
Forecasts indicate that most of Sunday’s rainfall will occur as showers, with the possibility of locally heavy downpours in the afternoon. Additionally, thunderstorms and some hail cannot be ruled out.
A pre-alert for snowfall has been activated for Tenerife, La Palma, and Gran Canaria at elevations above 1,800 metres, also coming into effect at midday on Sunday. This decision is based on information provided by AEMET and falls under the Canary Islands' Specific Emergency Plan for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the severe weather approaches. Authorities have advised the public to follow the self-protection guidelines provided by the Directorate General of Emergencies.
