The police are investigating the death of a 63-year-old man whose body was found floating in the waters off Cofete Beach, Fuerteventura, yesterday afternoon (Friday.)

The rescue was carried out by the crew of a GES rescue helicopter who retrieved the body approximately 100 metres from the shore.

According to the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES), a distress call was received around 2:45pm, alerting them that the man was found face down near the coast of Pájara, in the south of the island, and emergency resources were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The helicopter crew recovered the body from the water and airlifted it to Morro Jable, where SUC paramedics confirmed the man's death upon arrival.

The Guardia Civil is overseeing the investigation and secured the body until judicial authorities arrived to carry out the official removal to authorise an autopsy for official identification of the man and the cause of his death.
