Baggage handlers announce strike at Canary Islands airports over Easter

Baggage handlers announce strike at Canary Islands airports over Easter

Holidaymakers travelling to and from the Canary Islands this Easter could face disruption, as airport workers plan strike action that may also continue into the summer, including ground handling staff, who deal with baggage, check-in, and aircraft on the ground.

Trade union UGT has called for action involving two major companies: Menzies and Groundforce. Around 400 workers employed by Menzies in the Canary Islands are expected to take part at Gran Canaria, Tenerife North and Tenerife South airports, affecting airlines including Jet2 and easyJet.

Why are workers striking?

The union says there are ongoing problems with pay and working conditions, including:

  • unpaid or incorrect wages
  • mistakes in payslips
  • poor shift planning
  • long hours that are not properly compensated

They also claim the current airport contract system encourages companies to cut costs, which can lead to worse conditions for staff.

When could strikes happen?

Talks are due to take place tomorrow, Friday 20th March, and if no agreement is reached, strikes are planned for:

  • 28th and 29th March
  • 2nd to 6th April (during the busy Easter holidays)

There is also a warning that disruption could continue later into 2026 if the dispute is not resolved.

More action planned at Lanzarote Airport

Workers at Groundforce are also involved, with around 250 staff in Lanzarote expected to strike.

They are planning ongoing walkouts from 27th March, taking place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at set times throughout the day and night.

This dispute is mainly about pay rises linked to inflation, which the union says are not being properly applied.

What this means for travellers

The Canary Islands rely heavily on air travel, so strikes like this can cause delays, cancellations, and longer waiting times at airports.

Passengers are advised to:

  • check flight details with their airline before travelling
  • allow extra time at the airport
  • be prepared for possible delays

The union says strike action is a last resort, but warns the situation could worsen if no agreement is reached.
