The Tenerife Cabildo declared Level 1 fire prevention measures yesterday (Tuesday) and extended its ban on open fires in recreational and outdoor areas in forestal zones, including barbecues, bonfires, stoves, and gas cooking equipment.
In addition to the fire ban, the use of machinery or tools that could generate sparks, as well as fireworks in high-risk areas, is also prohibited. The Cabildo's statement also highlighted a new rule that forbids smoking in recreational areas, campsites, trails, and viewpoints (miradors), noting that many fire outbreaks are caused by improperly discarded cigarette butts.
The decision comes in response to current weather conditions and a pre-alert status for maximum temperatures and wildfire risk declared by the Canary Islands Government's Directorate General of Emergencies.
The Cabildo has advised residents and visitors to avoid forest areas during the alert and to exercise extreme caution with any activities that could lead to fires.
The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued warnings for high temperatures across all of the Canary Islands, including Tenerife, where conditions known as the Three30s are prevailing:
Temperatures above 30°C.
Humidity below 30%.
Winds above 30km/h.
