The third major storm of the season, named Caetano, has led to weather warnings across Spain, including alerts in the Canary Islands. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has called for heightened precautions as the storm brings strong winds, heavy rain, and dangerous maritime conditions.
CANARY ISLANDS UNDER YELLOW ALERT
The islands of Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Tenerife are under yellow alerts due to risks of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, especially in mountainous areas. AEMET has urged residents to secure outdoor objects and avoid coastal areas prone to high waves.
Nationwide Impacts: Five Regions at Orange Alert
While the Canary Islands face yellow-level warnings, five regions—Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, and the Valencian Community—are under orange alerts (significant risk). In these areas, wind speeds are expected to reach 90 km/h, and waves could rise as high as five meters along the Cantabrian coast.
In addition to the orange alerts, 13 other regions, including Andalusia, Aragón, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, and Catalonia, are under yellow alerts for strong winds and heavy rainfall. Some regions could see gusts up to 80 km/h, and heavy rain is expected in Asturias and Galicia, with up to 40 litres per square metre of precipitation.
In Asturias, snow warnings are in place for altitudes above 1,100 metres, and several interior areas across Spain are expected to experience severe wind conditions.
Storm Caetano’s Trajectory
Caetano is deepening as it moves over northern Spain, bringing overcast skies to the northern and Atlantic-facing regions of the country. In contrast, the Mediterranean coast will experience intermittent cloud cover.
Local governments and emergency services have activated contingency plans. Residents in affected areas, particularly along coastal and mountainous regions, are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated through official weather channels.
