Flights to the Canary Islands are usually smooth, but two separate incidents on Thursday reminded travellers how quickly things can change. Passengers on a Ryanair service from Edinburgh to Tenerife South faced a tense journey when a disruptive traveller caused problems on board.
The situation forced the crew to call ahead for police support, with air traffic controllers coordinating a fast approach and the Guardia Civil waiting at the airport when the plane landed.
On the same day, a Jet2 flight from Liverpool to Lanzarote requested priority landing after a young passenger suffered seizures mid-flight. Controllers cleared the airspace and authorised a high-speed approach to ensure the aircraft touched down as quickly as possible, where medical teams were ready to assist.
Thanks to the quick response from controllers, emergency services and airline crews, both incidents were managed safely, with passengers receiving immediate assistance on arrival.
In-flight incidents on routes to the Canary Islands have been making headlines in recent months. An EasyJet service from Birmingham to Tenerife South saw police called after a passenger urinated in the aisle mid-flight, while a TUI flight from Gran Canaria to Birmingham descended into chaos when an allegedly intoxicated traveller punched a crew member as the plane prepared to land.
In Lanzarote, a Ryanair passenger caused delays by refusing to take their seat and falsely claiming diplomatic status, leading to intervention by the Guardia Civil. Airlines such as Ryanair have since taken a tougher stance, introducing hefty fines and even pursuing legal action against those responsible for serious disruption.
