All-inclusive is in decline as stays with bed and breakfast increase

In the last few years, all-inclusive holidays have become more popular again in Lanzarote, to the point that there were seasons in which one in three holidaymakers chose this form of stay on the island. However, this pattern has been broken in the first quarter of 2023.

According to data from the Canary Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), the number of all-inclusive guests accounted for 26% of visitors between January and March of this year.

Just over 647,000 people visited in Lanzarote in the first quarter of 2023, meaning that 168,000 tourists chose this option for their holiday. This represents a drop of 6% compared to the same period of 2022. Last year, more than 750,000 visitors chose all-inclusive, which accounted for nearly 31.6% of all stays.

The data shows that all-inclusive in Lanzarote is chosen the most by guests staying at four-star hotels, which also had nearly two-thirds of all visitors in the first three months of the year, a similar figure to 2022.

However, the start of 2023 has seen an increase in travellers choosing bed and breakfast options (over 280,000) instead of all-inclusive, half board, or full board, partly because of price, partly because they are choosing apartments to stay in, and partly because they want more flexibility to leave the complex and discover what local bars and restaurants have to offer instead.

Bed and breakfast has accounted for 43% of all stays so far this year, making it the most popular choice of holiday on the island.
