AEMET updates weather warnings for Thursday in the Canary Islands

The Spanish Met Office (AEMET) has updated its weather warnings for the Canary Islands for today, Thursday 13th March, with a particular focus on coastal phenomena affecting most of the islands.

La Palma is at the forefront of these warnings due to a north-westerly combined sea swell, which is expected to increase from 4 to 5 metres along the northern and northwestern coasts. These warnings came into effect at 5:00am this morning and will remain active until 11:59pm tonight, impacting both the eastern and western parts of the island.

El Hierro, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria will also experience similar coastal conditions. In El Hierro, a yellow warning has been in place from 8:00am, as well as along the north coast of Tenerife. For northern Gran Canaria, the warning came into effect at 10:00am.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are not exempt from these conditions. Both islands have also been under yellow warnings from 10:00am, with the possibility of waves occasionally exceeding 5 metres during the afternoon. Additionally, north-westerly winds with gusts of up to 61 km/h are forecast for northwestern Gran Canaria.

Thursday’s weather forecast indicates cloudy intervals across all islands, with a chance of light, scattered showers in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura during the early hours and later in the evening.

For the rest of the archipelago, scattered showers are expected in the second half of the day, particularly in western La Palma, northern Tenerife, and eastern Gran Canaria.

Minimum temperatures will remain stable, while maximum temperatures will see a slight decrease, more noticeable in mid-altitude areas and mountain peaks.

Winds will blow from the west to northwest with occasional strong gusts, particularly in the central peaks of Tenerife, where very strong gusts are anticipated.
