AEMET issue orange weather warnings for the Canary Islands from Monday

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued orange and yellow weather warnings across the Canary Islands due to adverse coastal conditions expected tomorrow, Monday 17th March, and Tuesday 18th March.

Strong waves, reaching up to six metres, are forecast to impact all islands within the archipelago.

Orange Warnings: ‘Significant’ Risk for Several Islands

The orange warning, which indicates a ‘significant’ level of danger, has been activated for the following islands: La Palma, Tenerife, El Hierro, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura.

In these islands, north-westerly swells will bring rough seas with waves ranging between five and six metres, primarily consisting of ground swell. The warning will be in effect at the following times:

  • La Palma: Monday, 17th March, from 1:00pm to 11:59pm.
  • Tenerife: Monday, 17th March, from 3:00pm until Tuesday, 18th March, at 2:59am.
  • El Hierro: Monday, 17th March, from 5:00pm to 11:59pm.
  • Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura: Monday, 17th March, from 6:00pm until Tuesday, 18th March, at 2:59am.

Yellow Warnings: Big Waves and Strong Winds

A yellow warning, indicating moderate risk, has also been issued for La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, El Hierro, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura due to rough seas and adverse sea conditions.

In these areas, north-westerly swells will bring waves of four to five metres, with periods lasting 12 to 14 seconds.

Additionally, strong north-westerly winds reaching speeds of 61 km/h (Force 7) will be recorded in the maritime channel between Tenerife and La Gomera, increasing the hazards for boats and ferries. In La Gomera, waves are expected to reach four metres, primarily consisting of ground swell.

The yellow warning will remain in place until Tuesday, 18 March, at 7:59am.

Authorities Urge Caution

AEMET has advised residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution along coastal areas and to follow guidance from local authorities due to the risk of large waves and strong winds.

Mariners and those engaging in coastal activities should remain particularly vigilant, as conditions may pose serious dangers to safety.
