After weeks of calima and unusually high temperatures for the time of year, a more normal February is forecast for today and the rest of the month, with cooler temperatures, frost on the summit of Gran Canaria, and precipitation, in the form of snow, on the islands of Tenerife and La Palma above 2,000 metres high, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
The Atlantic front that has crossed the northwest of the Canary Islands combined with the presence of a Dana north of the Archipelago, has caused a sharp drop in temperatures and, although it has brought some rains, for now they will continue to be weak.
As forecast, there were strong winds yesterday with gusts up to 95 kilometres per hour in Izaña in Tenerife, and 77 kilometres per hour in Tejeda where a wall was blown over causing the road from Espartero, in Teror, to Pino Santo to be closed to traffic.
Yesterday Binter Canarias was forced to cancel two flights, one from Tenerife North to La Gomera and another from Gran Canaria to the north of Tenerife due to strong winds, and Aemet has maintained the yellow warning for wind in the western islands (La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and parts of Tenerife) for today.
Regarding temperatures, yesterday it was -3°C in El Teide, compared to 1.6°C in Llanos de la Pez, and 2.9°C in Cruz de Tejeda. The highest temperature was recorded at 24.3°C in Tazacorte in La Palma,and then 22.3°C in La Aldea de San Nicolás in Gran Canaria.
The most rain on Sunday was recorded by Aemet in Los Llanos de la Pez with 12.6 litres per square metre in the last 24 hours, followed by Tejeda with 11 litres, and San Juan de La Rambla, in Tenerife, with 10 litres.
