A 54-year-old man has died after being rescued from the sea at Playa de Esquinzo in La Oliva, Fuerteventura, yesterday afternoon, Saturday.
The Canary Islands Emergency Services received an alert at 3.30pm reporting that a swimmer had been rescued unconscious from the water around 100 metres from the shore.
Other bathers rescued the man and brought him back to the beach, found he was in cardiorespiratory arrest with signs of drowning.
Emergency coordinators instructed those at the scene by telephone to begin resuscitation while medical resources were dispatched to the area.
When they arrived at the beach, SUC paramedics continued with advanced resuscitation techniques, but they were unable to save him and his death was confirmed at the scene.
Emergency services faced difficulties accessing the beach by road, and a helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) was used to transfer the man's body from the beach to an area where the Guardia Civil and judicial authorities were waiting.
The Guardia Civil took responsibility for the corresponding proceedings following the incident, including official identification and ordering an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
