The Canary Islands are set to experience a widespread increase in temperatures starting this weekend, with temperatures higher than usual for December due to the arrival of a warm air mass and calima, as reported by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
AEMET's local delegate for the Canary Islands, David Suárez, has issued a forecast predicting a general rise in temperatures over the weekend, with the thermometers potentially reaching as high as 28°C. However, this temperature spike, considered unusual for the season, is not expected to warrant heat warnings on the islands.
The anticipated warm spell is projected to bring predominantly clear skies to the archipelago, with the possibility of haze appearing during the period in question.
AEMET's report, shared on their social media profiles, indicates that temperatures in mainland Spain could soar as much as 6°C above the norm for December. This weather anomaly is likened to conditions typically experienced in mid to late October rather than mid-December.
The intensity of this warm spell is such that, according to AEMET's records, the 11th and 12th of December could potentially become the warmest days experienced in December since records began in 1940.
