19-year-old man arrested for murder after street fight in Gran Canaria

The National Police have arrested a 19-year-old Spanish man of suspected murder, after a fight in Las Palmas ended with one of the two men dying in hospital after being knocked unconscious.

The incident occurred at 9.30pm last night on Calle Antonio Maria Mantique in the capital of Gran Canaria, when emergency services were called by onlookers after witnessing a fight in the street between two men, and one of them was knocked to the ground and was unconscious.

When the police arrived, officers found health workers from the emergency services already assisting the victim, also a 19-year-old man, who was in cardio-respiratory arrest, giving him CPR in the street, and the aggressor still at the scene, who they arrested.

They continued trying to revive him whilst carefully placing him in an ambulance to transfer him to the Doctor Negrin Hospital, where unfortunately they have confirmed they couldn’t save him, and he died.

An investigation has been opened by the homicide department of the National Police, and the Forensics Department have carried out an inspection of the site where the fight took place.

The National Police is awaiting the results of the autopsy to certify the cause of death of the victim and are continuing with the investigation into the facts and what caused the fight in the first place.
