Tenerife and Gran Canaria are among the new British Airways 'low cost' routes

The Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands are two of the initial routes in Spain announced by British Airways for their 'low cost' flights which will begin in March 2022, with the tickets already on sale. The airline has revealed today that destinations to Spanish airports include Tenerife, Las Palmas, Alicante, Palma, Ibiza, Madrid, Seville, and Mahón.

The airline announced in August its intention to create an independent short-haul business operating out of Gatwick, similar to its operation from London City Airport, which, although it operates under the name British Airways, is a completely separate entity.

The subsidiary will launch later in 2022 and in the meantime, short-haul services at Gatwick will be operated by the British Airways main company, until the Air Operator Certificate is issued to the new entities.

Short-haul flights will begin operating from Gatwick at the end of March, with three Airbus short-haul jets initially increasing the fleet to 18 aircraft by the end of May. In addition, customers will receive the same level of service as British Airways and will have the benefits of travelling with the British airline.

BA Chairman and CEO, Sean Doyle, said that “the creation of a new British Airways short flight organization means that Gatwick customers will benefit from access to a 'premium service' from the UK flag carrier at competitive prices".

"We look forward to bringing a short-haul network back to Gatwick, with a fantastic flight team in place, to serve our customers from London's second central airport, which we are sure will be a success," he added.
