Play airlines starts direct flights from Iceland to Tenerife

Icelandic low-cost airline Play has landed in Spain this summer with the launch of three new direct routes to Tenerife, Barcelona, and Alicante, with two flights per week on each route from Reykjavik. The airline, which offers 2,300 additional seats per week between Spain and Iceland, expects to reach occupancy of between 85 and 95% on flights this summer, "despite the complexities presented by the current situation."

Play, which is a new airline founded in 2019, has started its global operations this summer with a first flight between the Icelandic capital and London on June 24th. In Spain, it began its activity on June 29th with its first flight between Tenerife and Reykjavik, which now operate every Tuesday and Saturday to the south airport.

While Tenerife and Alicante are regular services throughout the year, those in Barcelona are seasonal, with a flight plan scheduled until the end of October and a restart scheduled for April 2022. "When planning our operations, we were clear from the beginning that both Tenerife, Alicante and Barcelona should be included in our route network," explains the CEO of the airline, Birgir Jónsson in a statement.

From December, Play will add Gran Canaria to its network, expanding its presence in Spain and consolidating its commitment to leisure destinations in southern Europe. In the long term, the company plans to add more frequent flights to existing destinations.

To enter Iceland, travellers must submit a negative Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours of the flight, vaccinated travellers can get a PCR test or a rapid antigen test, and unvaccinated travellers must also take a test upon arrival in Iceland, and remain in quarantine until the results are obtained.
