A new video filmed on Monday and Tuesday using drones shows the extent of the damage caused by the lava flows from the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma. From buildings to banana plantations, the lava has consumed and destroyed everything in its path with almost 600 homes gone as it makes its way, slowly but surely, to the Atlantic Ocean.
On Tuesday, the Spanish parliament officially classified the island as a ‘disaster zone’ which means that they can access aid for the people who have lost everything in the last 10 days since the eruption began.
The Canary Islands Government has already made an initial 10.5 million euros available to purchase 107 homes to re-house people as quickly as possible, and the central government will release funds to rebuild the infrastructure destroyed by the eruption and to support residents of the island.
The damage to people’s property is estimated at 200 million euros not including that caused to public buildings, roads and infrastructure.
