A joint operation by the Guardia Civil, the National Police and EUROPOL has led to the arrest of 37 people and the dismantling of a criminal organization that was allegedly filtering counterfeit 500 euro bills in to the system in several Spanish provinces.
According to the official police report, the detainees are accused of committing crimes of criminal organization, falsification of documents, counterfeiting of currency, fraud, money laundering and crimes against public health. In addition, the investigation remains open and more arrests are not ruled out.
The investigation began in October 2019, when agents detected counterfeit 500 euro bills in different locations in the province of Granada. Subsequently, new specimens of the same batch of forgeries were detected throughout the rest of Andalusia in the south of Spain.
