The Minister of Tourism for Spain, Reyes Maroto, has assured that the Government will continue to develop measures that are necessary to support tourism, and has expressed hope that Easter could be the restart of holidays at a national level in Spain, particularly the Canary Islands.
In a TV interview at the weekend, Maroto acknowledged that although the horizon to know when normality in tourism will resume “which is difficult to predict due to the pandemic”, she did say that the Government will continue working to prepare for that reopening.
At international level tourism is hoped to reactivate in summer, if the situation of the coronavirus pandemic improves and the vaccination process is accelerated, and in this context, assured that Spain, along with Italy, continues to be the preferred country for travelling to by European tourists in the coming months.
Maroto emphasized the importance of tourism for the country, and thanked the support received in Congress for the royal decree of urgent measures, referring to the agreed direct aid to the sector approved by the Government of 4.2 billion euros, to help hotels, hospitality, and tourism based businesses.
Last week the Ministry of Health extended the requirement for anyone travelling to the Canary Islands from mainland Spain, to present a negative Covid test result, until 15th February.
