According to the EF EPI 2020 report, published yesterday, the Canary Islands, ranks 3rd lowest in Spain for Spaniards that speak English with a score of 513 points which is 27 less than the Spanish average of 540), only ahead of La Rioja and Extremadura, in the ranking led by the Basque Country, and is ranked in the middle range for knowledge of the language.
Spain now holds 33rd position in the world ranking, with a score of 540 points, as the level of English for Spaniards hasn’t improved compared to other countries. Internationally, the Netherlands ranks number 1 for the third year in a row, followed by Austria, Denmark, Singapore, Norway, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Finland and Croatia, all of them in the Top 10, with a very high level of English. Germany, South Africa and Luxembourg are also on this list.
At the European level, Spain is ranked 25th out of 35 countries. At the national level, the Basque Country (with a score of 571) and Bilbao (582) are the region and the city that have the highest level of English in Spain.
