Covid update: Now over 1,000 deaths as daily cases increase again in the Canaries

We know you don’t want to hear this, but the Covid pandemic is not over yet. Yes, yesterday the islands were all kept at Level 1 because indicators are at low or very low risk for the various islands, however, daily cases are increasing, active cases are increasing, the R rate of contagion is increasing, the positivity rate of testing is increasing, incidence rates are increasing, so it’s only a matter of time before hospitalisations increase too if we continue in the same way.

Latest data shows that the downward trend has now stopped and is actually seeing some parameters go up as daily cases reported today are 96 in the Canary Islands, of which 48 (50%) are in Tenerife, 30 are in Gran Canaria, 10 are in Lanzarote, 5 are in Fuerteventura, 2 in la Gomera, 1 in La Palma, and none in El Hierro.

Because of only 81 medical discharges, active cases have increased to 782 with 71 Covid patients in wards, 19 in ICU, and 627 in home isolation. There have also been two more Covid related deaths in Tenerife in the last 24 hours, which means that 1,003 people have now died with Covid in the Canaries since the pandemic began.

The message from the health authorities is very similar as in the UK if you want the pandemic to be over, winter is a critical time as viruses are more active during this period. If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, get it done, 100% of ICU admissions with Covid in the last two weeks were people not vaccinated. If you have been, make sure you get your booster when requested to, and keep following regulations, wear your mask, keep distance, and maybe not hug and kiss when you greet people!
