The Canary Islands ends the week adding another 330 new cases of coronavirus and with the pandemic centered in Gran Canaria and Lanzarote who have 135 and 112 cases, respectively in the last 24 hours, and in fact, the two islands account for 75% of the new cases registered.
The Ministry of Health has said they will send medical staff to Lanzarote from the other islands if they can’t cope with the number of new cases and hospital admissions, as cases continue to increase on the island.
After yesterdays Governing Council meeting, they announced that Lanzarote is now in alert Level 4 restrictions due to the severity of the situation. El Hierro has also been moved up a level, from 1 to 2, as their situation has also worsened.
It has also been confirmed that the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria, in Tenerife, is carrying out a series of tests to find out if some samples of Covid-19 in the Canary Islands are from the British strain of the SARS-Cov-2 virus. Apparently, Iceland has reported through the Early Warning and Response System for communicable diseases in the European Union (EWRS) of four positive cases with the variant VOC 202012/01 (B.1.1.7) in tourists from of the Archipelago.
At the moment, the Government of the Canary Islands has no evidence that cases of the British strain have been detected in the islands.
