Covid update: Islands exceed 39,000 infections by adding 140 new cases

The Canary Islands has added 140 new cases of coronavirus today (Thursday) that means that more than 39,000 people have been infected by the virus, since the start of the pandemic. In the 24 last hours there have been two more deaths, in Gran Canaria, which brings the total number of fatalities to 567.

The islands have seen a drop in active cases to 6,483 after 333 medical discharges today, with 84 patients admitted to Intensive Care Units (four more than yesterday) and 287 patients admitted to hospital wards. The other 6,112 people are being treated at their homes, according to the update by the Ministry of Health at 2:00pm.

While waiting for the levels of restrictions to be reviewed on Sunday, Gran Canaria continues with a downward trend in new infections and today is the island with the second most new cases by reporting 46 cases, raising its accumulated total to 15,968. In addition, it adds another 169 epidemiological discharges that make active cases fall to 3,689.

Tenerife continues with a pattern of slight increases in cases and ranks as the island with the most new cases today, adding 59, raising its accumulated total to 16,381. Lanzarote , which is still at level 4 restrictions, continues with its downward path and adds 21 cases that bring its total to 4,296, of these 404 are still active.

Fuerteventura remains stable and registers 12 cases in the last hours to a total of 1,539 of which 132 are still active. La Palma notifies of only two new cases, and El Hierro and La Gomera remain unchanged.
