The Ministry of Health have informed of 174 new cases of coronavirus today in the Canary Islands, of which 90 are in Gran Canaria, 51 are in Tenerife, 28 are in Lanzarote, 3 are in La Palma, and 2 are in Fuerteventura. There have also been two Covid related deaths today, 1 in Tenerife and 1 in Fuerteventura, both men, one of 85 years old and another of 88, both were hospitalized and suffered from previous pathologies.
So far 547 people have lost their lives since the beginning of the pandemic, but the good news is that not only is the rate of infection slowing down in the islands, but the rate of deaths is as well. The R rate for infections has dropped to its lowest since last summer at a rate of 0.87, which means that an infected person will now on average pass the virus on to less than one person.
The high rate of Covid cases has lead to the start of transferral of patients to the Insular University Hospital Complex of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to begin from Lanzarote. According to the Ministry of Health, this is being carried out "in anticipation of possible new admissions" in the ICU of the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital which is already at capacity.
