The Guardia Civil has uncovered a large-scale theft of tyres from a business in Gran Canaria, allegedly carried out by one of its former employees. The man is under investigation for a continuous offence of theft after detectives confirmed he had stolen 677 tyres and four exclusive-model alloy wheels while working for the company.

The case began when the business in Agüimes filed a complaint, having detected serious irregularities in its monthly inventory records. The missing stock represents a financial loss of around €30,800.

Initial suspicion quickly fell on a former employee who had worked at the company for about three years. His contract had ended due to concerns over the possible misappropriation of goods and suspected misuse of number plates belonging to the business.

Tracing the stolen goods through online marketplaces

Investigators focused their efforts on tracking unofficial sales channels. A crucial lead emerged when officers identified an advert in an online marketplace offering four specific alloy wheels, a model exclusively distributed by the affected company.

This discovery confirmed that the stolen material was being resold, prompting further enquiries into the seller.

A mechanic acting under instruction

The police identified the seller as a mechanic at a different car repair workshop based in Ingenio. He claimed he was acting under the direction of his supervisor.

During the investigation, the complainant was able to identify the recovered items without any doubt, as the products still had their original delivery-note stickers and the company’s branding.

Workshop owner also under investigation

The workshop owner later admitted to purchasing the tyres and wheels from the main suspect for €350, a price equating to roughly 40% of their true market value. As a result, he is also being investigated for an alleged offence of receiving stolen goods.

The Guardia Civil continues its enquiries to determine whether more individuals or outlets were involved in the distribution of the stolen material. Further updates will be released as the investigation progresses.
