A Global public bus caught fire yesterday afternoon (Sunday) on the side of the GC-5 highway in Gran Canaria, with, thankfully, all passengers escaping unharmed.
The incident occurred near San Roque, where a National Police patrol car noticed fire and smoke coming from one of the bus’s wheels. Officers immediately alerted the emergency services, stopped the bus, and evacuated all passengers.
Despite attempts to extinguish the flames with fire extinguishers on the bus, the fire spread very quickly along the vehicle and could not be controlled until firefighters arrived on the scene and successfully put out the blaze.
All passengers were unharmed thanks to the quick reactions of the National Police officers and were taken to their destination in a replacement bus.
The fire was reportedly caused by a tyre blowout, which, combined with friction from the wheel rim against the asphalt, ignited the blaze. The prompt response of the police and firefighters ensured the safety of all passengers and minimised the potential damage.
