The Canary Islands Trade Unionists and the Canarian Workers' Union formally opposed the proposal yesterday (Friday) to allow businesses to extend the number of Sundays and bank holidays they are allowed to open to 12 per year.
This extension in the opening of holidays, currently set at ten, has been proposed alongside a possible modification of the Law of Organization of the Commercial Activity of the Canary Islands, as warned in a statement by these two organizations, which form part of the Federation of Canarian Trade Unions.
It would be one more "tightening of the screw" in the midst of a "convulsive socio-political situation" and a serious global economic crisis that could cause the closure of small businesses and the consequent loss of jobs, say the Unions.
This reform, they denounce, is promoted by large stores with the excuse that internet commerce has grown, which they themselves promote.
Base unionists of the Canary Islands and the Workers' Trade Union Front have expressed their "absolute rejection" of this reform, which "would violate rights, destroy employment, and reduce the possibilities of developing businesses that are not large stores.”
For this reason, they announce that they will summon the rest of the unions, social groups, and associations of small businessmen to coordinate mobilizations against the extension of the number of opening days on Sundays and bank holidays.
