Long queues of cars and traffic congestion have returned to Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote, prompting fresh calls for urgent action to manage visitor access and protect the area.

The PSOE has criticised what it describes as “traffic chaos”, with vehicles backing up at park entrances and access reportedly becoming difficult to control. Environmental officers from the Guardia Civil have again been forced to intervene to enforce rules, including limits on the number of vehicles allowed to park.

According to the party, this is not an isolated issue but a recurring problem, with officers repeatedly stepping in to restrict parking to a maximum of 90 vehicles due to safety and environmental concerns.

Former head of Lanzarote’s Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism, Benjamín Perdomo, blamed the situation on a lack of action by the current island government. He said the ongoing congestion and vehicles encroaching on protected areas reflect poor management and a failure to control access.

The PSOE says a solution is already in place, pointing to a previously designed mobility plan that includes park-and-ride facilities in Tinajo and Yaiza, along with shuttle buses to reduce the number of private cars entering the park.

They argue the plan is ready to be implemented and would help ease pressure on the protected landscape while improving the experience for both residents and tourists visiting one of Lanzarote’s most popular attractions.

The party warns that ongoing congestion risks damaging the island’s reputation as a sustainable destination, while also causing unnecessary delays and frustration for visitors.

Calls have now been made for the immediate rollout of the shuttle bus system and designated parking areas to restore order, protect the environment, and ensure smoother access to Timanfaya.

Visitors planning to travel to the park are advised to expect delays at peak times and consider visiting earlier in the day or using organised transport where available.
