According to the Alliance of Tourist Municipalities (AMT), there are three municipalities in the Canary Islands that are in the top eight for the whole of Spain leading the recovery of the tourism sector, with figures that are close to the summer of 2019, prior to the pandemic, in terms of job creation, number of tourists, and number of overnight stays.
These three are Adeje and Arona in Tenerife which cover Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos, and San Bartolomé de Tirajana in Gran Canaria which is home to Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles. They join Benidorm, Calvià, Lloret de Mar, Salou and Torremolinos in the mainland.
The vice president of the AMT and mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, has highlighted in the note that, according to the data made public by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), regarding the beginning of the summer, the sector "continues with its recovery process with more than 42 million overnight stays, which represents an increase of 60.7% compared to the beginning of the summer of 2021 and only 2% less compared to the summer of 2019”.
Granados highlights that this analysis can be completed with an average occupancy in the eight municipalities of the AMT that is around 80% so far this summer, while in the rest of Spanish destinations it barely reached 70%.
