The Spring Hotels Group and the historic agricultural company FAST have signed a groundbreaking agreement to distribute locally produced fruits and vegetables to the group’s three hotels located in the south of Tenerife.
This partnership highlights both organisations' commitment to sustainability, the local economy, and the environment.
Supporting Local Production and Sustainability
The agreement aligns with the ‘Km0’ philosophy, which prioritises the consumption of food produced close to where it is consumed. By sourcing produce within a limited radius, this initiative significantly reduces the carbon footprint caused by food transportation.
FAST, with a network of over 400 local farmers, ensures the delivery of fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables directly from Tenerife’s farms to the Spring Hotels resorts. This collaboration marks Spring as the first hotel group to formalise such a deal with the Tenerife-based agricultural company.
Positive Environmental and Economic Impact
The agreement benefits the local economy by promoting Canary Island farmers, boosting employment in the agricultural sector, and encouraging the circular economy. At the same time, it minimises environmental impacts by supporting short-distance food distribution.
This initiative is a key step towards sustainable tourism, offering visitors high-quality, locally sourced products while reducing the environmental footprint of the tourism sector.
Strategic Circular Tourism Partnership
The partnership is part of the Circular Tourism Communities Project, where both FAST and Spring Hotels serve as strategic partners. Beyond promoting local produce, the collaboration includes measures to reduce food waste and optimise the use of natural resources, thereby closing the cycle of production and consumption.
Miguel Villarroya, CEO of Spring Hotels, said: “The integration of Km0 products into our offering not only benefits local farmers but also enhances our guests' experience with fresh, authentic produce from our islands.” He further noted that the hotel group’s path forward “is one of close and full collaboration with our environment in pursuit of sustainable tourism.”
