The Guardia Civil has arrested three people in Santiago del Teide who had just stolen around 400 euros from German tourists using the so-called ‘2-euro method’. They were surprised by the officers who caught them red-handed counting and dividing the money they had stolen.
According to the Guardia Civil press release, the way of pickpocketing people known as the 2-euro method, involves an older person who acts as the ‘hook’ by asking his victims for change of 2-euro coins to see where they keep their wallets.
A second person spots where they keep it and passes the information on to a third who takes it from the victim by means of the hug method, or with a simple trip.
The three detainees already have criminal records for similar activities in Adeje and Arona, but have avoided the courts until now by giving false addresses. They have now been handed over to the judicial authorities for sentencing.
The Guardia Civil asks people to be aware of this method of being pickpocketed as it is being used all over the Canary Islands, especially in tourist areas as the number of arrivals to the islands is increasing.
Please have your wits about you and make sure your belongings are safer from these opportunists.
