Local Police in Playa Blanca have removed 82 electric scooters from public streets after discovering they were being operated without the required authorisation in the tourist resort of Yaiza, Lanzarote.
The scooters were available for hire through a shared rental system. They were found across different areas of Playa Blanca between 9th and 13th May. Officers seized the vehicles and transferred them to municipal storage facilities after confirming the company responsible did not have permission to run the service.
Yaiza Town Hall has now opened an official investigation into the company, which has already been identified and could face fines for operating without authorisation. Authorities say the activity breaches local regulations introduced in 2024 governing the use of personal mobility vehicles, including electric scooters.
The company has also been informed that it cannot recover the 82 scooters until the administrative process has been completed. Officials say the restriction will remain in place while the case is being reviewed.
Mayor Óscar Noda and the head of the Local Police, Vladimir Guadalupe, thanked officers involved in the operation for their swift action.
The crackdown comes as many tourist areas across the Canary Islands continue tightening controls on electric scooters and rental mobility services, particularly in busy resort zones where safety and pavement use have become growing concerns.
