Two Local Police officers have been praised after successfully resuscitating a 20-day-old baby who suffered a cardiac arrest in Lanzarote. The dramatic incident took place in the municipality of Tinajo on Sunday, when the baby’s parents initially rushed to the local health centre seeking urgent help, only to find it closed.

With no medical staff available, the parents quickly went to the nearby police station, where officers immediately stepped in and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

The officers carried out life-saving manoeuvres for around 10 minutes before emergency services arrived. Paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) then continued resuscitation efforts for a further 20 minutes.

In total, the baby received approximately 30 minutes of continuous CPR a critical factor in saving their life.

Emergency Transfer to Hospital

After being stabilised, the newborn was rushed to the Hospital José Molina Orosa before being transferred by helicopter to a specialist maternal and children’s hospital in Gran Canaria for further treatment, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Authorities have highlighted the rapid response and professionalism of the officers, whose actions were crucial in keeping the baby alive during those vital first minutes.

The incident has also underlined the importance of immediate first aid knowledge and training, particularly in situations where every second counts.

For many, it serves as a powerful reminder that swift intervention, even before paramedics arrive, can make the difference between life and death.
