A beach in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, has been temporarily closed following a sewage and wastewater spill caused by a blockage in the local drainage network.
Yaiza Town Hall announced today, Friday, that the closure affects both swimming and public access to the beach in Playa Blanca village and will remain in place until water quality tests confirm it is safe to reopen.
According to the council, the spill originated from a blocked inspection chamber in the sewer system near Parque Mediterráneo, allowing wastewater to reach the sea.
Beach to Remain Closed Pending Water Tests
The decision to close the beach follows advice from the Canary Islands Health Service's Public Health Inspection department.
Authorities have ordered that both swimming and access remain prohibited while warning signs stay in place until microbiological testing confirms the water meets the required health standards.
Water samples are expected to be taken on Sunday, in line with the established public health protocol, with laboratory results anticipated on Monday.
If the tests show that water quality has returned to safe levels, Yaiza Town Hall says the beach will be reopened immediately for both bathing and public use. The council has urged residents and visitors to respect the closure until further notice to ensure public safety.
